Welcome to a new school year!
Parents and students,
Welcome to another year at Triad Math and Science Academy! We are going to have an incredible year. This year I will see each student once a week for 45 minutes. 5th grade will be a little different, I will see half of the students twice a week until mid-January when the semester switches, then i will see the other half twice a week for the rest of the year. My goal for teaching is to produce students who have a sound appreciation for music and a foundation for further music instruction. Music is a unifying force throughout the world, a connection that transcends language and cultural barriers, as well as an art form to express emotion in a safe and healthy way. It is my passion and I’m pleased to be able to teach it.
The following is a sampling of what we will be doing in music this year:
This year in Kindergarten, we will explore music through movement and dance, learn songs, recite poems with instruments, learn how to create a steady beat, create simple rhythms and improvisations with our voices and instruments.
In 1st grade we are going to start notating music, learn about eighth notes, learn about music in different cultures, learn about the different settings for music, and use dynamics and tempo when singing and playing instruments.
2nd grade students will learn how to problem solve in order to improve their singing and instrument playing technique, notate and read half notes and rests, quarter notes and rests and eighth notes. We will also learn how to classify instruments based on how they produce sound and what instruments are in the orchestra.
The 3rd grade students will learn about ¾ and 4/4 time signatures, create an ostinato accompaniment with instruments to songs and poems, learn how to respond to gestures made by a conductor, and learn how each instrument sounds and be able to identify them by sound alone. 3rd graders will also start learning how to play the recorder after Winter Break.
In 4th grade we are going to learn partner songs and rounds, compose music using half notes and rests, whole notes and rests, dotted notes, and our familiar quarter and eighth notes. We will learn about how music has played a role in the history of North Carolina, and some folk songs and dances from North Carolina, and review instruments of the orchestra. We will be playing music in our ‘found sounds’ orchestra as well. 4th graders will also start a unit on recorders when we come back from Winter Break.
This year in 5th grade, we will learn about how music is reflected in the culture of the United States, including folk songs and dances and how music shows what the country was going through at the time. We will also be composing music using all of the notes we know, half notes and rests, whole notes and rests, quarter and eighth notes, dotted half notes, and we will be learning 16th notes. We will be improvising and performing for the class, this year improving our ensemble playing skills with our bucket drums, generously donated by Lowes Home Improvement on Elmsley Dr.
